O Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia é uma unidade de investigação inter-institucional vocacionada para a investigação em antropologia social e cultural. É um centro recém-criado que obteve a classificação de “Muito Bom” no último exercício de avaliação da FCT e resulta da fusão de duas anteriores unidades de I&D da FCT também avaliadas com “Muito Bom” — o Centro de Estudos de Antropologia Social (CEAS / ISCTE) e o Centro de Estudos de Migrações e Minorias Étnicas (CEMME / FCSH-UNL). A estas duas anteriores unidades reconhecidas pela FCT juntaram-se outros centros e grupos de investigação (CEEP/FCSH-UNL, NEA/UM, ETNA/FCSH-UNL) e um grupo de investigadores do Centro de Investigação em Antropologia (CIA / FCT-UC), bem como outros investigadores sem filiação a qualquer unidade de investigação.
Em termos funcionais o CRIA está dividido em quatro pólos institucionais, localizados em quatro instituições de ensino superior (ISCTE, FCSH-UNL, FCT-UC, UM). Cada pólo desenvolve de forma autónoma as suas actividades promovendo também actividades conjuntas com outras unidades de investigação e ensino/formação. Os interesses científicos dos investigadores que compõem esta nova unidade de I&D serão agregados em quatro linhas temáticas:
1. “Identidades Sociais e Diferenciação/Social Identities and Differentiation”;
2. “Práticas e Políticas da Cultura/Culture: Practices, Politics, Displays“
3.“Migrações, Etnicidade e Cidadania / Migrations, Ethnicity, Citizenship”;
4.“Poder, Saberes, Mediações/Power, Knowledge, Mediations”.
As linhas de investigação permitem agregar e cruzar os interesses dos investigadores distribuídos pelos quatro pólos institucionais. Assim, promove-se o diálogo e a cooperação entre grupos e entre pólos de forma a criar uma plataforma multi-vocal que permita, por um lado, contribuir para o avanço do conhecimento em cada uma das quatro linhas temáticas e, por outro lado, promover o avanço do conhecimento na antropologia social e cultural de forma alargada.
A Antropologia Portuguesa tem participado de forma activa na revitalização e reorientação estratégica da antropologia internacional, contribuindo para o crescimento exponencial de actividades baseadas em relações institucionais existentes em território nacional, bem como para a cooperação inter-académica a nível internacional (que tem ocorrido sobretudo com instituições congéneres nos EUA, na Europa e no Brasil). Com base nestas relações institucionais pré-existentes, os investigadores que constituem o CRIA pretendem criar uma rede científica capaz de maximizar recursos e capacidades que estavam dispersas e conferir-lhes uma maior profundidade científica a nível teórico, metodológico e temático.
Durante os próximos anos a actividade do CRIA terá como principal objectivo promover o avanço e a internacionalização da Antropologia Portuguesa. Para que este objectivo se possa concretizar definimos como eixos de acção os seguintes:
a) Desenvolvimento de projectos de pesquisa teórica e aplicada;
b) Organização de eventos que promovam o debate científico e a difusão da pesquisa (congressos, seminários e conferências);
c) Edição de publicações científicas que permitam a difusão dos resultados de projectos de investigação a nível nacional e internacional;
d) Organização de cursos e de actividades relacionadas com a formação pós-graduada;
e) Encorajamento da colaboração internacional em rede, no desenvolvimento de projectos e grupos de investigação e de promoção científica;
f) Reforço das relações de cooperação com instituições congéneres, nacionais e internacionais;
g) Acolher estudantes do ensino superior, licenciados e investigadores de pós-graduação nas suas actividades de investigação e contribuir para a sua integração na comunidade científica.
O CRIA pretende ser a principal plataforma em Portugal dedicada à Antropologia Social e Cultural, liderando as actividades de investigação nesta área de estudos, estando organizado de forma a optimizar recursos materiais e intelectuais, e a promover novas oportunidades de pesquisa tanto a nível nacional como internacional.
Para cumprir esta estratégia o CRIA procurará fontes alternativas de financiamento através de protocolos de colaboração com outras instituições dedicadas à investigação e com organizações não governamentais em Portugal e no estrangeiro.
CRIA, an inter-institutional centre for social and cultural anthropology was founded when two top evaluated (“Very Good” in the rankings) units of FCT — CEAS and CEMME — merged to join four other groups (CEEP/FCSH-UNL, NEA/UM, ETNA/FCSH-UNL, a group of researchers in Social and cultural Anthropology at CIA/FCT-UC) along with other researchers/university lecturers without affiliation to any established group or research unit. This national platform in anthropology provides scientific research leadership and is organized to optimize intellectual and material resources, while promoting new research opportunities at both national and international levels. CRIA assembles researchers from various institutions, many of whom have had a pre-existing relationship in cooperation on the given thematic networks, projects and activities.
The administrative structure of CRIA will be divided over four institutional posts (ISCTE, FCSH-UNL, FCT-UC, UM), each post autonomous to develop its own activities as well as to promote joint activities with other research and/or teaching units. CRIA’s scientific resources will focus on research groups linked to four thematic lines, each one headed by a senior scholar responsible for the coordination and supervision of the activities to be developed. CRIA will promote researchers’ mobility to work in more than one group, facilitating institutional integration, and allowing movement among CRIA’s institutional posts.
CRIA’s administrative organization is composed of a Scientific Council, tasked with defining the unit’s main research lines, and including all scholars with the rank of PhD from the different institutional posts; an Executive Board (drawn from the members of each of the institutional posts, with positions on the Board disbursed by rule in a proportional system based on the number of each institutions eligible PhD members), charged with carrying out internal executive functions and external institutional dialogue; and an External Advisory Board, composed of Portuguese scholars and highly-regarded, internationally-recognized foreign academics. Finally, CRIA will also benefit from a centralized Secretariat which will handle project management and financial accounting (and will be located at CEAS/ISCTE’s facilities during this consolidation phase).
Portuguese anthropology has participated in the revitalization and strategic reorientation of international anthropology (taking place primarily in the USA, in Europe and in Brazil) with which Portugal has shared an exponential growth of collaboration among existing institutional relationships and an increase of inter-academic cooperation. Based on these pre-existing long-term and productive cooperative relationships the scholars founding CRIA intend to create a combined scientific network, capable of making the best-use of resources and skills (currently dispersed all over the country) and endow it with a greater theoretical, methodological, and thematic scientific depth. Through CRIA, a national platform in anthropology has been created for Portugal, providing scientific research leadership and organized to optimize intellectual and material resources, while promoting new research opportunities at both national and international levels. CRIA will promote the advancement of Portuguese anthropology and its internationalization through:
a) the development of theoretical and applied research projects;
b) the promotion of events encouraging scientific debate and the diffusion of research (congresses, seminars and conferences);
c) the edition of scientific publications (promoting the national and international diffusion of research project results);
d) the organization of classes as well as other activities for postgraduate teaching;
e) the encouragement of international network-based collaboration in research projects or groups, as well as in other international collaborations that promote scientific diffusion;
f) the establishment and reinforcement of cooperative relationships with like institutions, both national and international;
g) and will provide a place to welcome undergraduate students, graduate students and PhDs in their integration into the scientific community.
CRIA’s general objectives will be enhanced by four main thematic research lines:
1.“Social Identities and Differentiation”;
2.“Culture: Practices, Politics, Displays“;
3.“Migrations, Ethnicity, Citizenship”;
4.“Power, Knowledges, Mediations”.
In each one of these main lines, research activities will assemble eligible PhD team members from all four institutional posts. Researchers will contribute through inter-group dialogue and cooperation to create a multi-vocal platform for the advancement of knowledge in each of these four anthropological thematic research lines. Each line will also develop activities related its specific thematic research area, simultaneously promoting events and approaches across all four lines. To best achieve these objectives, CRIA’s Executive Board will work to mobilize human resources to seek and obtain alternative funding sources, primarily through the establishment of cooperation protocols with similar institutions as well as with nongovernmental organizations in Portugal and abroad.
