  • 'Dwarf galaxies: keys to galaxy formation and evolution', Lisbon Portugal
Event date: 2010-09-09 A workshop on 'Dwarf galaxies: keys to galaxy formation and evolution' will take place in Lisbon Portugal from 9 to 10 September 2010. While many lines of evidence highlight the role of dwarf galaxies in the cosmic scenery, as possible building blocks of Hubble-type galaxies and important contributors to the chemical enrichment of the universe, the formation and evolution of these systems is only slightly understood. The nearby universe reveals a diversity of dwarf galaxies, spanning a wide range in their photometric, morphological and chemical properties. This symposium aims at providing a forum for observers and theoreticians to exchange ideas and new results on the many evolutionary aspects of dwarf galaxies near and far: what has been learned thus far and which are the main opportunities and challenges for the near future. Some of the topics that will be addressed are: - the birth of dwarf galaxies: theoretical concepts and observable relics across wavelength and time, - the morphological, structural and chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies, - evolutionary connections between early-type and late-type dwarfs - the star formation history of dwarf galaxies and its dependence on intrinsic and environmental properties, - the origin and implications of starburst activity in dwarf galaxies, - the fate of dwarfish systems born out of tidally ejected matter in galaxy collisions.

  • Conference on e-services for agriculture, food, environment and life sciences in Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa
Event date: 2010-09-08 A conference on e-services for agriculture, food, environment and life sciences in Africa will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 8 to 10 September 2010. E-agriculture has a crucial role in the empowerment of farmers in rural areas all over the world though information and communication processes, supporting them so they can improve the quality of life for themselves and their families. Information and communication technologies (ICT) give access to timely information such as weather forecasts, better pricing and allow the facilitation of on-line trading which can improve the productivity of rural agricultural activities. The two-day conference will focus on the conceptualisation, design, development, evaluation and application of innovative ways to use ICT in the rural domain. The conference will, among others, explore the environmental impact of e-agriculture in the improvement and more efficient use of natural resources and exploitation of nature's potential towards a sustainable growth that best matches Africa's needs. The event will also examine current trends in the fields of agroecology and organic agriculture and the way these can be supported through e-agriculture, as well as particular applications and use cases that meet the needs of the African continent.
