The 4th edition of the Caminhados Seminars, taking place in the Peneda-Gerês National Park, is dedicated to the theme of Trees and invites reflection on the increasing anthropisation of landscapes and the impacts of human activity on natural spaces. In a context marked by the Anthropocene — understood as an expression of the profound geo-planetary transformations caused by human action — the initiative invites us to question the place of humans and the ways in which we understand and inhabit wooded spaces.
Inspired by peripatetic and transdisciplinary approaches, the 2026 Walking Seminars promote the production of knowledge through direct experience of the territory, encouraging sensory contact with biotic and abiotic elements and fostering dialogue between different forms of knowledge — academic and local. This edition also seeks to revisit historical influences on the human perspective regarding the forest and trees, questioning the possibilities of practices more consistent with contemporary discourses on conservation and sustainability.
The programme takes place on 16 and 17 May, with activities in Rio Caldo and Leonte, including walking seminars, gatherings with local guests and cultural events. Among the invited participants are Amélia Frazão-Moreira, Maria Patrício, Manuel L. Rodrigues and José Eduardo Reis.
The 2026 Walking Seminars are organised jointly by the Agrupamento de Baldios da Serra do Gerês, the Associação de Compartes de Campo do Gerês and the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, with the support of local organisations.
